Houston calls Denmark

RIVAL received an urgent order from Wartsila when a supply boat in Houston lay idle because a machinery part had broken down. It was urgent. Such a ship typically costs around USD 50,000 a day, so it is expensive to have it sitting in port. “They called and ordered a transition flange, which
is a connection between an engine and a generator. At the same time, they stipulated that RIVAL had to find a particular approved material. We found it, had it cut, and made it ready for welding. Although it was urgent, there were also requirements for certification. Det Norske Veritas (DNV) had to compare certificates and procedures during the work. Representatives travelled from Norway to Denmark to monitor the procedures. The flange was approved, packaged and dispatched to Kastrup Airport and from there to Houston, where the vessel had been lying idle for only six days,” says Mr Soerensen.
